About Katara

Katara was born in the Southern Water Tribe, a small village terrorized by the Fire Nation. In one of the raids, her mother was killed by Fire Nation soldiers. Her father left to fight in the war, leaving her and her brother Sokka to be raised by their grandmother Kana. With a small population of mostly older women and children, Katara had to grow up quickly - taking care of chores and acting as a maternal figure to her brother. She had a strong desire to improve her waterbending skills and figured out a few moves on her own, but there were no other waterbenders in her village to train her. Katara's heritage remains displayed through most of the series in her trademark "hair loopies" and her necklace with the water emblem - both of which were passed down from her mother and grandmother.

In a fit of frustration at her brother, Katara and her waterbending shattered an iceberg, which turned out to have someone in it. That person was Aang, the Avatar who had been missing for the last 100 years. When he was forced to leave the village, Katara showed no hesitation in wanting to follow him. After all, they had a common mission: to master waterbending at the North Pole, on the opposite side of the world. And so the adventure began...

Katara can be sweet and caring, comforting Aang when he is upset. She has a strong motherly instinct, often keeping the group on schedule, or warning them when their antics are going to cause trouble. Sometimes it helps hold them together, but it can also cause problems when the others feel she's being too overprotective. And she's no stranger to causing trouble herself, especially when she feels someone has been wronged. She's fiercely competitive and stubborn, and she's determined to do her part to fight with Aang in ending the war. Her waterbending skill is excellent, partly by nature and partly through hard work. Besides just fighting, she has the ability to heal wounds with water by manipulataing the body's 'chi'.
